Roman Jewelers Raises Awareness and Funds Through Virtual Silent Auction to Aid Children Impacted by War in Ukraine
On April 12, 2022, Roman Jewelers, launched a virtual silent auction that raised awareness and over $24,000 for UNICEF, a humanitarian aid organization, which is working diligently to provide care for children impacted by the war in Ukraine. Roman Jewelers worked with Givergy, an online fundraising platform, to establish a virtual fundraiser that featured fine jewelry pieces, as well as unique gemstones, that were donated by several sponsors.
This Sapphire & Diamond Pendant was a popularFundraising piece.
Roman Jewelers established this online fundraiser for the children of Ukraine with the resources they have at their fingertips—in this case—fine jewelry. This contemporary form of community outreach, which expanded beyond the Somerset County region, provided the opportunity to meet new friends and donors that found out about the auction through social media shares and posts. The company is now sharing its fundraising efforts with the jewelry press in the hope that other jewelers from around the globe will join in and create similar campaigns. The Roman Jewelers/Givergy online auction platform, which is currently viewable at https://givergy.us/romanjewelers, includes a personalized message from the Roman Jewelers Family.
Roman Jewelers has a personal story, too. Roman & Sophie Shor defected from the communist USSR in the early 1980s with their children. Their love of America is so strong because their beliefs in the pursuit of freedom, their support of democratic values, and their very deep understanding of the effects of government suppression are even stronger. Beliefs that have been passed down to their daughter and co-owner, Lucy Zimmerman.
"The impact of war on children is devastating and the trauma experienced can have lifelong effects. It is crucial that they receive key necessities like healthcare, nutritious meals, education, and protection. Our company swiftly established this silent auction to help support this essential aid," said Lucy Zimmerman, co-owner of Roman Jewelers.
This Pendant was donated by T.Gluck & Co.,one of the 15 partners who generously donated tothe Roman Jewelers Auction
The goal of this virtual silent auction, which concluded on May 1, 2022, was to raise $15,000, but due to the extraordinary support of its customers and online community, Roman Jewelers raised $24,091, whereas 100% of the proceeds are being donated to The Children of the Ukraine.
Roman Jewelers’ employee, Angelika Vereb, knows first-hand how vital aid is currently. Vereb currently has family in Kharkiv, the first city that was attacked on February 24th. Vereb’s mom, brother, sister-in-law, and nephew (age 16) are safe, but many children have been sheltering from bombs for months in the subway station and surviving on donations of food, water, and medicine.
“I hope and pray that food does not run out and that they can continue to survive. Donations are needed right now and for as long as this awful war lasts and beyond," said Vereb. She mentioned that she finds it difficult to even find the words to express how touched she is by her friends, customers, and employer. In short, she said, “I am grateful for the generosity of my customers and friends. It means so much to me personally, but also to the Ukrainian people. They do not deserve this, and the children are the most affected.”
Lucy Zimmerman stated, "We are incredibly overwhelmed and thankful to everyone who has contributed beyond what we ever expected. We are so grateful to our staff, jewelry partners, customers, and the community for helping us make this silent auction a success. Exceeding the goal of this fundraiser just goes to show the extraordinary things we can accomplish when we work together. However, our work is not done yet."
According to UNICEF, the war is creating almost one child refugee per second, a startling statistic that the owners and staff at Roman Jewelers take to heart and feel compelled to keep helping.
Lucy Zimmerman stated, “We do not want to stop! We are currently custom designing a pendant for the children of Ukraine that will be available for purchase, and again, we will donate 100% of the proceeds. We want to spread the word. The more the jewelry industry and community participates, the more help we can provide."
Roman Jewelers would also like to thank its jewelry partners, which include Hearts on Fire, Roberto Coin, Artinian Gems, Pink Diamond, Freida Rothman, Izi, Parade, Veer, Uneek by Benjamin Javaheri, Gabriel & CO., T. Gluck Company, GN Diamond, Vivaan, Getana & Co., and Fischer Jewelry Designs—for donating beautiful jewelry pieces that encouraged ongoing engagement and bidding during this virtual silent auction.

How to Choose the perfect Mother’s Day Gift
Take a moment with me to celebrate all moms around the world in wishing them a very happy Mother’s Day! Chances are high that if you are reading this blog, I can guarantee you fall into one of 3 groups:
You have a mom
You are a mom
You have (or have had) a figure in your life that you think of as a “mom”
That being said, we aren’t here to just talk about any mom…we are here to talk about your mom or the “mom” in your life. Mothers play an extremely pivotal role in shaping who we are and how we live our lives.
I could make the very compelling argument that every day can (and probably should) be Mother’s Day. But instead, they were given one day…one day in the entire calendar year devoted to them and celebrating all they do for their families and loved ones.
So here is the 100-million-dollar question…. what do you get your mom to celebrate her on the day devoted to her?
Right off the bat, you definitely have options to choose from…
We could go with flowers! But those wilt after some time and lose the color and vitality they had when you first bought them…let’s keep brainstorming…
Oh, I got it! Chocolate! Who doesn’t love chocolate? But then again…once that’s gone all you have left is an empty, heart-shaped box and chocolate-stained fingers.
The answer is jewelry. A gift that never wilts, never tarnishes, and can be utilized every day in many circumstances! Jewelry is a timeless symbol of love and devotion so it’s only fitting we gift it to someone on Mother’s Day who embodies those very same qualities. And what’s even better…jewelry can be created completely custom to perfectly complement your who your mom is.
So now that we have settled on the “what” as far as your Mother’s Day gift goes, let’s talk more about the “what kind”. As we know, there are a plethora of options when it comes to jewelry, so taste is crucial.
Similar to food preferences, not everyone has the same preferences or likes the exact same things. That being said, you know your mom like (or maybe even better than) the back of your hand so it should be smooth sailing!
Between your knowledge of your wonderful mom and my jewelry knowledge and mildly entertaining sense of humor, the sky’s the limit for what we can create together!
I have broken down some of the best and most thoughtful gifts to get your mom for Mother’s Day. But wait there’s more!
As I always like to go the extra mile for those who read my words, I’ve also done something special in honor of your mom’s special day. I have also come up with several examples of how we can create custom pieces for each type of jewelry to showcase your mom and the special bond shared between her and her loved ones.
If you came looking for creative, unique gift ideas for mom, you have come to the right place…let me show you what I’m talking about!
Necklaces
Necklaces are one of the most versatile pieces of jewelry someone can wear. And when it comes to a custom necklace for Mother’s Day…the possibilities are truly endless!
Stunning Gabriel & Co. Necklace
Since you are already here searching for the perfect Mother’s Day gift, let’s brainstorm some ideas on how to take a necklace that fits the personality of your mom. One of the first ideas that might come to mind is initials or symbols.
Mom’s own initials are an option but that is just scratching the top of the iceberg. Initials of children, pets and even lost family members can all play a crucial role in a custom necklace. What do you think about precious stones?
Or even better…birth stones! A necklace comprising of the birth stones of the most important people in your mom’s life will give you the ability to create something that is as sentimental as it is stunning.
I hope you are hungry because I am going to give you one more piece of food for thought!
With the latest laser technology, engraving jewelry with extreme precision and detail is now something we can leverage when creating custom jewelry. Why not get mom a necklace with a pendant that has her favorite quote engraved on it?
Or even a small love message to let your mom know the impact you have had on your life. The good news is: if love is the motivation behind our idea, you are guaranteed to create something special, impactful and overflowing with love.
Earrings
Earrings, like necklaces, also have the strong advantages of versatility and creative freedom when it comes to creating a custom gift, especially for Mother’s Day.
Hearts on Fire Diamond Drop Earrings
Depending on style and the type of lifestyle your mom lives, a wide variety of earrings can be purchased that are not only beautiful but also functional. Simple earrings such as studs utilizing your mom‘s birthstone or even the first letter of her name can make an intimate and beautiful statement on Mother’s Day.
Another item that has been used for decades in relation to moms and Mother’s Day is pearls. Pearl earrings portray class, motherhood and elegance while also being relatively simplistic for everyday use. A lot of people think that a Mother’s Day gift must be a huge statement… And sometimes it should be! After all mom deserves that occasionally. A truly special gift is something that your mom can wear every day and be reminded of your bond and the love you share. That is simply beautiful and can be done with a custom jewelry gift such as earrings.
Aside from stones and pearls, there are plenty of symbols that can also be placed on an earring to directly relate to mom and her personality.
For example, earrings that portray interlocking hearts to show the bond of love between a mom and her family. I’ll hit you with another example…earrings that resemble hollow tear drops; inside the hollow drops are little hearts with names of children or loved ones.
A gift like this (and many others) does the job of symbolizing that a love for mom and a moms love for her family are always close and with a strong bond, nothing can ever break them apart. They are always a part of us. I’ll tell you what…if you weren’t thinking about earrings before, I bet you are now!
Rings
Lagos Sterling Silver Caviar Band
If you have settled on looking for a ring for your mom for Mother’s Day, there are a couple of important things I want you to take into your Mother’s Day gift search.
When it comes to a Mother’s Day ring, I don’t want you to be thinking about the ring itself.
I know that sounds counterproductive in the worst way but allow me to explain…
Instead of the ring you will gift, I want you to instead draw your attention to theotherrings that your mom wears on her hand or hands. It could just be her engagement ring, or her wedding band, or both or a plethora of other combinations.
Your main objective is to find something that can either compliment the other rings as well as stand out on its own. At first glance this might sound like a daunting task. But I have good news…it isn’t! I will provide you with not only some ideas to go off, but some lasting advice on how to become a professional Mother’s Day Gift Giver!
Because Mother’s Day is about the sentiment of showing appreciation and love for moms everywhere, I love the idea of imbedding hidden messages or nods to your mom within the jewelry itself.
Think about a custom ring maybe with your mom’s birthstone, and it even has an engraved message on the inside of the ring. Something that, to the outside world, goes unseen…kind of like moms! Being a mom is often a thankless job.
A message inside a ring let’s your mom know that on the inside we all adore her. Other ideas aside from a birth stone could include signet rings, perhaps looking to her zodiac sign for inspiration as well.
When it comes to getting your mom a Mother’s Day ring, choosing the right jeweler you choose to partner with on this endeavor cannot be understated. The right jeweler will be able to see what your mom wears, understand your creative and know exactly how to compliment her existing rings.
Expert jewelers and custom jewelry go together peanut butter and jelly...a pair that gets the job done in both cases!
Bracelets
Lagos Blue Ceramic Diamond Caviar Bracelet
If your mom is a fan of bracelets or wearing jewelry on her wrists, then this could be an excellent source of custom Mother’s Day gifts as well. A bracelet is an excellent way to “spice up” a bare wrist or ankle (an anklet is an ankle bracelet so both count) if mom does not wear one already.
Bracelets also have the advantage of being very simple and under the radar as well as having space around the bracelet itself to get extremely creative (think about how much more space lives on a bracelet when compared to, let’s say, an earring).
Since my job is to make your job as easy as possible, here's what I’m going to do for you...I am going to throw several examples at you regarding bracelets.
One will be simple and sincere, others more custom and creative and finally something flashy and elegant. After all, each mom out there is special and unique and requires a gift that is just as special and unique.
Let’s try this bracelet on first...a simple bangle made from sterling silver or even white gold. Instead of a clasp, there is a pair of hands that come together and join one another to secure the bracelet around the wrist.
This is an incredibly symbolic gift to both give and receive. 2 clasped, interlocking hands is the ultimate sign of love/friendship; a perfect gift for the mom who wears jewelry, but the preference is something simple, symbolic and sophisticated.
Now we can get into the more custom options as far as what we can do with a bracelet (hint: we can do a lot)! There are examples that we have previously discussed such as birthstones or names of children engraved or imbedded into the bracelet.
But since I am proud of you for making it all the way to this part of the blog, I am going to give you an extra special super-secret bonus idea.
Make sure no one else is in the room and it is just you.... are they gone? Okay so here’s what I am thinking.... numbers!
Okay so at first glance that is boring and very anticlimactic but let me give you context. Think about a beautiful bracelet you are presenting your mom on Mother’s Day. As you secure the clasp around your mom’s wrist, she looks on in awe and notices something engraved onto the bracelet...its numbers! But wait there’s more...
These are not just any numbers...the numbers here comprise a date. More specifically, the date your mom...well...became a mom! If there are multiple children, then put multiple dates! Each time becoming a mom is a new unforgettable experience in and of itself so the more the merrier in my humble opinion.
I will give you one more set of numbers you can think about trying. How do we feel about coordinates? I assume everyone loves them just as much if not more than me...An extremely unique approach to custom gift giving.
Why not get the longitude and latitude of the hospital where your mom’s first born came into this world. Or maybe the coordinates of where your mom grew up as a child; where she learned fromher momhow to act and was molded into the wonderful person you see before you.
A gift bred from sentimentality is a gift not easily forgotten and always cherished...remember that!
One final example I would like to leave you with is a tennis bracelet. With diamonds comprising the entire bracelet, there is a certain incredible aura about a tennis bracelet. With the amount of time and work that your mom puts in, she deserves to feel and be treated like royalty daily.
That’s how I was raised and it’s how I will raise my children to treat their mom...like a queen! A tennis bracelet has that same effect of evoking importance and class; something moms always deserve to feel.
So how did we do? I think we organized our thoughts came away with ideas and are ready to knock this Mother’s Day out of the metaphorical park!
As I said and now as you can see, never underestimate how creative you can be when it comes to creating a custom jewelry gift for Mother’s Day. While most moms have different tastes, preferences and lifestyles, one constant remains. The love they have for their families and children.
When you can gift someone something that was crafted or comprised of love, there is a profound impact that even I can’t put into words (and I put words together all the time so that’s saying something)! Be creative, be bold and never settle. Your mom did not when she raised you to be the amazing human you are...I am proud of you and your mom is too. Now let’s head out and get her a gift she will remember for many Mother’s Days to come!
Happy Mother’s Day to all those celebrating!

Customize Your Carats: How New Trends in 2022 Are Shaping How We Choose Engagement Rings
How do people express the feeling of love to their boyfriends or girlfriends?
If I went out into the streets of New York City and polled 100 complete strangers, what do you think they would say?
Flowers? Chocolates? An expensive dinner at a 5-star restaurant? All very possible and likely choices.
However, the overwhelming consensus opinion is quite simple…if you love someone deeply and completely, you express that love in a manner that is powerful and timeless…with an engagement ring.
And not just any engagement ring…a diamond engagement ring which has stood as the symbol of marriage and affection for what seems like forever.
That is the way it’s always been and always will be, right? Maybe not…
You might be surprised to find out that the diamond engagement ring and marriage is not the invincible pairing it seemingly has been for hundreds (and really, thousands) of years.
Like most industries, the market for engagement rings has seen a substantial shift when it comes to what customers want.
Think of the shift in the last several years to electric vehicles. Think about how many Tesla cars you see on the road during your morning commute.
Each year brings new trends and ideas to the party and 2022 is no exception.
Let me lead you on a journey that will help strengthen your knowledge of what engagement rings were, what they have become, and where we see them going this year and beyond.
THE PAST: Where Did Engagement Rings Come From?
Excellent question! Here is a fun fact for you to throw out at your next dinner party…DID YOU KNOW that the earliest record of an engagement ring (or “promise ring”) goes back over 5000 years in Ancient Egypt? From the Great Pyramids, records of engagement rings have been found in Rome and Greece. Earliest depictions of rings even featured hand carved etchings of the bride and groom within the ring! Talk about a high pressure project…
After diamonds were discovered and the technology was developed to cut them properly, their beauty and value stood unrivaled as the mainstream gemstone of choice for a marriage proposal.
Now that we have gotten a taste of the past, let’s take a look at what the 21st Century has brought us as we enter 2022 and what engagement rings look like now. Right this way…
THE PRESENT: Modern Trends In Engagement Rings
Like most industries over the past 20+ years, the market for engagement rings has grown and expanded far beyond the conventional diamond engagement ring. What was seen as the one true option when looking to “pop the question” has become a foundational backbone. Creativity and ingenuity have become major factors in what people look for in an engagement ring in 2022.
Let’s look at some of those trends now and some ways we are branching off from a conventional diamond engagement ring.
A Unique Cut: When actor Ryan Reynolds proposed to his wife Blake Lively, he did so with an engagement ring that was anything but conventional.
The ring he proposed with was a 12-carat diamond that is oval in shape, centered around a simple rose gold band, covered in smaller diamonds. The ring cost is estimated at $2 million dollars and is an absolute show stopper (go Google it now and see for yourself…I will wait here after you check it out…).
This is just one example to illustrate new behavior in the mindset of consumers. Lately, fancy cut diamonds, such as oval, cushion, and marquise cut diamonds have risen in popularity, to name a few. Each cut offers a unique style and energy to the ring which is sure to be a trend which will continue.
Non-Diamond Gemstones: Another trend gaining popularity this year is using a non-diamond gemstone as the center stone for an engagement ring. Rubies and Sapphires provide that “wow” factor to a ring (as most precious stones do) while also being extremely unconventional.
Think about it…would you want to be the person at the party who everyone is talking about your one-of-a-kind ruby engagement ring?
Come to think of it, an “Engagement Ruby” does have a nice ring to it, don’t you think?
Even pearls have emerged as popular examples of a modern approach to a timeless style.
Natural Diamond vs. Lab-Grown Diamond: Today, shoppers are more knowledgeable about engagement rings and the options available. The lab-grown diamonds entered the stage a few years ago, and will continue to gain popularity and demand.
The differences between the two types of diamonds can be shown under very thorough examination (i.e. microscope) but are virtually identical to the naked eye. This makes lab-grown diamonds a hot commodity amongst ring-seekers.
What is even more enticing is that lab-grown diamonds can cost 30%-40% LESS than natural diamonds.
Not to mention the fact that natural diamonds take somewhere between 1-4 BILLION years to form!
Two Stones Are Better Than One: One of the most unique and "fashion-forward” styles in engagement rings is called Toi et Moi. Toi et Moi is French for you and me, also called a two-stone ring. This modern twist on an engagement ring consists of not one, but two complementary gemstones.
And, yes, when it comes to an engagement ring, you would want to invest in something that represents romance in addition to a breathtaking look. After all, an item that embodies love should look as if it personifies the romance and affection that any lasting relationship is built on.
Here comes another fun fact for that dinner party you might be going to…DID YOU KNOW that one of the first recorded instances of a Toi et Moi style engagement ring was used in the marriage of Napoleon Bonaparte and his wife Josephine? Yeah, me either…
The two gemstones united in the engagement ring, is a very intimate and sweet symbol. It is a representation of the love which unites two people in a marriage and offers an extremely outside the box look.
Bottom Line…along with purchasing your first house or first dog (some would argue that a first dog is the most important…I won’t argue that one), buying an engagement ring is one of the most personal and important decisions you will make in your lifetime.
Compared to an engagement ring, not many items can elicit the emotion and incredible memories that come with an engagement ring and the four words that most often precede it (will you marry me?).
As we have seen, there are many new trends and an ever-changing landscape of creativity coming into the engagement ring space in 2022. That being said, finding a jeweler that you trust who will help you fall in love with a ring that speaks directly to you should always be a top priority. Finding the right jeweler will always be one of the most important steps you can take on your journey for the perfect custom engagement ring.
And when it comes to custom-made engagement rings, the sky is truly the limit to the amount of creativity and personalization that a custom engagement ring can have.
That ring will always serve as a beacon in your world, a testimony that you have found the perfect person to share your life with, and that your relationship is unique in this world. As we have seen and will continue to see, ring style, diamond and gemstones shapes, and even diamond and gemstone’s origin can be ways to create a one-of-a-kind engagement ring.
So why shouldn’t your ring represent your unique love? Well…IT SHOULD! I do believe that you are a one in a billion person and your engagement ring should reflect who you are and who you choose to spend the rest of your life with.

It is why we started this online auction site. The website also accepts monetary donations of any amount.
Roman Jewelers has a personal story, too. As many of you know, Roman & Sophie Shor defected from the communist USSR in the early 1980s. Their love of America is so strong because their beliefs in the pursuit of freedom, their support of democratic values, and their very deep understanding of the effects of government suppression are even stronger. Beliefs that have been passed down to their daughter and co-owner, Lucy Zimmerman.
We have employees past and present, too, that are Ukrainian. Their loved ones are still there and being affected directly by this invasion. It is all heartbreaking.

Roman Jewelers Celebrates March is Me!
Roman Jewelers is pleased to announce that it will be participating in the Women's Jewelry Association's (WJA) third annual March is Me Month campaign to align with Women’s History Month in March and International Women’s Day on March 8, 2022. The campaign was developed in collaboration with over 30 members of WJA’s Women’s Executive Leadership Forum with the goal of empowering women to purchase fine jewelry for themselves. March is Me Month will officially launch on March 1, 2022, calling on every woman to celebrate herself, visit a retail jeweler like Roman Jewelers in Bridgewater, and treat herself to a piece of fine jewelry no matter the reason. The campaign is an industry-wide initiative supporting women’s empowerment. Lucy Zimmerman, co-owner of Roman Jewelers said, "My Mom and I both believe women can do anything and be anything and that deserves to be celebrated. I've seen that first hand by her example." Ms. Zimmerman's "mom," is her mentor and co-owner, Sophie Shor. They work hand and hand everyday along with a staff of mostly women ("and some great guys, too") to run the company started by Zimmerman's Father, President, Roman Shor. "I'm so proud of my daughter. Not just because of her hard work and business achievements, but because she is generous, kind and a good friend to all. She is always there for our Roman Jewelers team, for our family and for our community." Ms. Zimmerman's response, "Thanks, Mom" adding she learned from her the importance of being grateful."Women work so hard inside and outside their homes, parenting children, and volunteering and helping their communities. Sometimes, they don't take time for themselves," adds Ms. Zimmerman. She says it is precisely why Roman Jewelers was on board with the "March is Me" campaign, so women will, "empower and reward themselves...maybe even with a well deserved, beautiful piece of jewelry."Jewelry gifts for self purchase can be as modest or magnificent as the woman chooses. Often, Ms. Zimmerman says some of the designer brands like Lagos, Gabriel and Mikimoto are popular choices because of style and price, and adds that ladies always love diamonds that remind them to sparkle every day and all year long.

Ms. Zimmerman selected a heart shape for this exclusive creation because it is truly a symbol that is universally adored and can be given as a gift to celebrate an anniversary, birthday, graduation, or other special occasions. As a 4thGeneration jewelry designer, Lucy was determined to craft a distinct piece, and after many designs, she was able to design a heart that was unique. Little did she know it was also so appropriate for her Mom to introduce that evening. The Share your Heart Pendant will be available for sale at Hunterdon Healthcare’s Hospital gift shop as well as at Yesterday’s Treasures, the non-profit highend resale shop that helps support the Hunterdon Healthcare Foundation. It is located in Flemington at the corner of Route 31 and Sand Hill Road.
Robin VonOhlsen, Hunterdon Healthcare Foundation’s Manager of Retail Services said that the shop sold a necklace on day one, adding,"Our supporters are always coming in looking fr a meaningful gift, like jewelry. This season, with the tiein to helping the cardiac rehabilitation center, the significance of a gift from our shop has double the impact. And the pendant is just beautiful...not to mention so well made."
